Universal Orlando Resort – Epic Universe
The Challenge
At Universal’s Epic Universe, storytelling extends underfoot. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Stardust Racers roller coaster queue. It's an elevated, high-traffic environment that calls for immersive theming, structural complexity, and extreme durability.
Designing the Stardust Racers queue presented a series of tightly constrained technical and aesthetic requirements:
Minimal build height: A mere ½-inch height differential separated the existing concrete slab from an adjacent terrazzo platform.
Elevated deck & waterproofing: The queue is above occupied spaces, requiring a continuous waterproofing solution.
Movement, vibration, and impact: The finished floor had to stand up to constant roller-coaster vibration and heavy foot traffic.
High-density penetrations: More than 600 handrail penetrations pass through the deck.
Shrinkage and dimensional stability: Building to the required thickness while maintaining dimensional stability, resisting cracking, and remaining bonded under dynamic loads.
Immersive aesthetics: The floor needed to be a visual extension of the attraction’s narrative—evoking the look of natural stone with a “not of this world” character.

The Solution
The project team selected a Resinwerks Epoxy Mortar Resurfacer flooring system, developed in collaboration with Bomanite® decorative concrete and installed by Edwards Concrete of Orlando, Florida.
The Epoxy Mortar Resurfacer flooring system is specifically engineered for builds in the ½-inch range where durability and dimensional stability are critical.
Traditionally used in heavy-duty industrial flooring, this system has evolved into a stand-alone architectural surface for demanding environments.
Monolithic, shrinkage-free performance: Unlike cementitious materials, the epoxy mortar does not shrink or crack during cure.
Integrated waterproofing and protection: Installed over a reinforced waterproofing membrane, the system delivers exceptional resistance to moisture.
Advanced topcoat system: Once placed, the epoxy mortar surface was textured, patterned, and stained; sealed with multiple coats of fast-setting polyaspartic topcoat; and finished with HDC 100 high-wear urethane in a satin sheen.
The Results
The completed Stardust Racers queue floor is a seamless, highly durable finished surface that meets both the structural and visual requirements of the attraction.
This project demonstrates how advanced resinous systems can transcend traditional utility roles to become integral architectural elements.
The flooring is also a deliberate extension of the attraction’s story:
- Multi-tonal grays with red accents
- Stamped to mimic a surface that feels “not of this world”
- A natural satin stone sheen calibrated to the lighting conditions of the roller coaster queue
Collaboration
Successful delivery of this system relied on close coordination between material technology, decorative design, and installation.
Resinwerks provided the advanced epoxy mortar and coating technology, while Bomanite brought decorative concrete expertise to transform the technical system into a themed architectural element. Edwards Concrete, an Orlando-based contractor, played a critical role in executing the design within tight tolerances and aggressive theme-park schedules.
The final result is a surface that is subtle, grounded, and fully cohesive within the larger themed environment—supporting the guest experience while quietly managing the demands of moisture, movement, and heavy use.
